Rider University Art Gallery presents an exhibition titled “Joy of Ink and Fiber,” featuring works by local artist Marie Sturken, from Thursday, March 12, through Sunday, April 12. Curated by Harry I Naar, the exhibit will include an opening reception on Thursday, March 12, at 5 p.m. and a discussion with the artist on Thursday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in the Art Gallery. Admission is free.
Marie Sturken is a papermaker and printmaker whose works in handmade paper are included in many public and corporate collections. They include the Museum of Modern Art Library, New York, N.Y.; The Newark Library Print Collection, Newark, N.J.; the New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, N.J.; Bristol-Myers Squibb, Lawrenceville, N.J.; Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, New York, N.Y.; and Johnson & Johnson Headquarters, New Brunswick, N.J. A founding member of the Princeton Artists Alliance (PAA), she has exhibited recently in two PAA exhibits.
The exhibition will span many decades of her work, the common thread being her drive to try something new, moving from drawing and painting to etching, lithography, monotypes and handmade paper. Marie Sturken, reflecting on the exhibition said, “I would like the viewers and especially the students to see that there are many ways to make art. In my own life-long journey, trying new ways and being excited about them has kept my life fresh and interesting.”
