by Kristine A. Brown
It is with deep sadness that Rider University announces the passing of Charles E. Altmeyer, former chairman of the University’s Board of Trustees, on Tuesday, June 7, 2016. Altmeyer, 90, died at his home in Pittsboro, N.C.
Altmeyer served as Rider University trustee from 1980 to 1989, and again from 1993 to 2002. He served as chairman from 1986 to 1988.
Born in Evanston, Ill., Altmeyer served in the U.S. Navy upon graduation from high school serving his duty in the Pacific Theater. He then attended Northwestern University, earning a degree in electrical engineering. This led to a successful career working for such organizations as Aplleton Electric, General Electric and Chandeysson Electric Company, where he worked for 17 years and served as president and CEO. He then founded his own company, Tec Tran Corporation, which supplied braking components for subway trains.
Upon his retirement to North Carolina, Altmeyer continued to work for Orange County Habitat for Humanity, serving on its board of directors. He was an avid fan of his beloved Northwestern Wildcats and Chicago Bears, and enjoyed traveling both domestic and abroad.
A memorial service will be held in August at the Duke University Chapel in Durham, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Orange County Habitat for Humanity.
