Beginning this fall, the Westminster Choir College Chinese Music Ensemble will be open to community members over the age of 18. There is no tuition, and participants may borrow an instrument to use during the semester. Participants must be able to read Western music notation, but no instrumental experience of any kind is required.
Rehearsals are on Monday evenings from 6:30-8 p.m. on the Westminster College campus in Princeton, starting on Sept. 12. There will be 11 rehearsals and one concert each semester. Participants can choose to learn the erhu (fiddle), the liuqin (mandolin), the ruan (round lute), the dizi (flute), the yangqin (hammered dulcimer), and guzheng (zither). Primary instructors will be world-renowned erhu virtuoso and composer Wang Guowei, and Music from China Executive Director Susan Cheng. Westminster faculty member Eric Hung is the assistant instructor.
Participants are expected to attend all rehearsals and the concert, to practice approximately two hours each week, and to take care of their loaned instruments. Community members interested in learning more are invited to attend one of two open houses, which will be held on the Westminster campus on Tuesday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. in Bristol Chapel and Monday, Sept. 12, at 6:30 p.m., Cottage 1.
