by Karly Munoz '17
The Celebration of Lights, followed by the lighting of the library, takes place this year on Nov. 20. The annual campus events celebrates diverse holiday traditions, including Boxing Day, Christmas, Diwali, EID, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Three Kings Day, accompanied by food and entertainment for the entire campus community.
Director of Multicultural Affairs Pamela Pruitt describes the event as “a special time at Rider, when the air is filled with good spirits and fellowship for all.”
Hosted by the Student Government Association and the Office of Multicultural Affairs, the events help kick off the holiday season as experienced by Rider’s diverse students, faculty and staff. Participants light candles and sing and dance according to different holiday traditions.
The lighting of Moore Library includes the presentation of the Cranberry Court, as well as a special visitor and other attractions. In years past, students have enjoyed painting ornaments, a make-your-own hot chocolate bar and ice skating. “I like the atmosphere and seeing the library lit up for the holidays,” says Matt Caruso ’17, who looks forward to the event every year.
The Celebration of Lights begins at 6 p.m in the Student Recreation Center Atrium, followed by the lighting of the library from 7 to 9 p.m.
