Hundreds of Mercer County students displayed science projects judged by professional scientists
Hundreds of Mercer County students in grades 4 through 12 displayed their science projects at Rider University on March 14 and 15 as part of the Mercer Science and Engineering Fair. Nikhil Gopal of the Lawrenceville School won the senior division grand prize (“The Rider University Award”) with his project, Point of Care Testing for Malaria Using a Smartphone and a Microfluidic ELISA Chip. James Gow of Lawrence High School took second prize (“The Earl S. Rommel Award”) with the project Testing Valproate and Surfanct Regulation as Potential Therapeutics for Nitrogen Mustard-Mediated Lung Injury in Wistar Rats. Both Gow and Gopal will appear at this year's Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in Phoenix, Ariz., in May. Like each participant, the winners prepared a researched paper and presentation board that were judged by professional scientists and engineers. Run by the Mercer Science and Engineering Club in conjunction with Rider, the Mercer Science and Engineering Fair has been held for more than 50 years in Mercer County.
