Events in April range across a wide-spectrum of Asian cultures
by Aimee LaBrie
From a tea and sushi night to a Bollywood dancing demonstration by Tashan (Rider’s Bollywood dance team) to a themed-movie and a late night karaoke fest, Rider students have the opportunity to experience a wide-range of events this April in celebration of Asian Awareness Month, co-sponsored by ASAR (Asian Students at Rider) and the Office of Multicultural Affairs.
Sandani Weerasinghe ’16, president of ASAR, encourages all students to get involved. “Everyone is welcome to celebrate Asian Awareness month with us," she says. "The events are a good way to meet new people and to learn about a variety of cultures at the same time.”
Heather Dalal, the faculty advisor for the student group and assistant professor-librarian, sees the various events as an extension of the student experience. “College should be about more than just taking classes and getting your degree," she says. "It should also be about the people you meet and about expanding your experiences. And the ASAR students have much to share and are very excited to bring their cultural experiences to the community.”
Holi is a national holiday in India known as the festival of colors. At Rider, Holi will be recognized on April 18 from at 5 to 7 p.m. by the track. Students are invited to come together to throw colored powder on one another near the track. “It will be a messy, colorful, and memorable event,” Dalal explains. Food and music will also be part of the celebration.
Another must attend event is ASHA, held on Sunday, April 27, from 8 to 10 p.m. in the BLC Theater. “This is our annual cultural showcase displaying a variety of performances and featuring a date auction. And proceeds will go to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital,” says Weerasinghe.
This year, all members of the Rider community are invited to dance, perform or sing. “We have a great group of very hard working and talented people involved. I guarantee this an event you don’t want to miss,” Dalal adds.
