Join the Rider community April 1 from 3-9 p.m. on the Campus Mall
by Rachel Stengel '14, '20
For more than a decade, Rider University has hosted the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraiser, Relay for Life. During this year’s event on April 1 from 3-9 p.m. on the Campus Mall, the University hopes to raise $40,000.
This year’s theme, Knock Cancer off the Board, will bring attendees together to participate in a number of fundraising activities, including board game tournaments, a dodgeball tournament, pie eating contest, scavenger hunt and more.
The event is open to Rider students, faculty and staff, as well as alumni and the general public. Those interested in participating are encouraged to register here.
“Relay for Life is so special because it unifies the entire Rider community in the fight against cancer,” says senior Kayla Wagner, co-chair of Relay for Life.
Throughout the event, participants will complete laps around the Campus Mall with at least one member of each team walking at all times. The significance — efforts to fight against cancer never stop. Donations to sponsor laps are now being accepted. Participants can also sign up for a campsite competition. Teams are encouraged to decorate their campsites along the Campus Mall in accordance with the board game theme.
Cancer survivors will be honored during the event with an honorary lap around the Campus Mall. A luminaria ceremony, where participants decorate paper lanterns with the names of those affected by cancer, will be followed by a moment of silence for those lost to the disease.
Rider has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to help eliminate cancer since first hosting the event in 2009. For 35 years, communities across the world have come together to honor loved ones and take action through Relay for Life. It is the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event dedicated to saving lives from cancer. Funds raised through Relay For Life directly support breakthrough research, 24/7 support for cancer patients, access to lifesaving screenings and more.
