Jeremy Hester begins paid internship in June following graduation
by Katie Nicholas
Senior English major and journalism minor Jeremy Hester was selected for the highly competitive Dow Jones News Fund. As part of the program, he will have a paid internship with The Washington Post this summer.
“I'm hoping to use this opportunity to grow my skills with editing and really become the best that I can be,” says Hester, who plans to pursue a career in journalism or publishing. “I know that whatever I do after this, the skills I learn at The Washington Post will be extremely valuable, so I really want to do my best to make the most of it.”
The Dow Jones News Fund trains college students through paid summer internships in newsrooms around the country. This year’s class represents 107 college students nationwide, the largest in nearly a decade. The interns will attend training sessions in business and data reporting, digital media and editing before reporting to work in June at nonprofit news sites, niche publications, TV and radio stations, and regional and national newspapers.
“The Dow Jones News Fund summer internship program is one of the most competitive in the nation, often drawing talented student journalists from Ivy League schools and major state universities,” says The Rider News’ faculty adviser.
Hester worked on The Rider News, the University's student newspaper, as a copy editor and writer.
“The job requires an eagle-eyed precision for grammar, spelling, writing style and substance,” The Rider News’ faculty adviser says. “Jeremy brought all these abundant skills and talents to editing and proofreading every article in every issue of the newspaper.”
Hester is also a member of Sigma Tau Delta, an international English honors society. He also completed a paid internship at Macmillan Publishers in 2020 and 2021. As a sales and special market intern, he helped sell different publications to bookstores and various markets.
The Rider News’ faculty adviser has no doubt Hester will succeed in his next step of his career. “His newspaper experience at Rider and his background as an English major and journalism minor make Jeremy ideally suited for the multiplatform editing internship at The Washington Post.”
