Joey transferred to Rider ahead of his sophomore year, after attending another school as a freshman, where he juggled being a student athlete and working full-time. When it came time to return for sophomore year Joey said, “I needed a change, something that was more adaptive to my schedule, with teachers that were understanding for working students.” Rider was the change that Joey needed, the professors were supportive and flexible, making his school-life balance easier to manage.
Being a student at Rider University was a wonderful experience, with caring, thoughtful professors and staff. My favorite part of my time at Rider were my interactions with my professors, who provided a great learning environment and were always accessible.”
Joey utilized the J-term, a semester offered during winter break that allowed him to make the most out of his busy schedule. Each course was a three week program, this meant that everyone was on the same page and motivated to complete the course, with increased interaction from professors. The Prior Learning Assessment was one Joey cites to be the most valuable thing Rider offered him. This course helped him cultivate thoughts that would transition from learning experiences to a working environment.
His journey at Rider began with three night classes a semester, but as he progressed through, he became more confident taking online classes. This format still allowed him to get the one-on-one support, education and flexibility he needed, while also learning to develop the self-discipline and motivation required to succeed in the online learning environment.
“It worked for me and it could definitely work for others,” he said.
Joey is currently working in Business Development with Jingoli – DCO Energy & Affiliates, a company that is also a valued partner of Rider University. He encourages his coworkers to follow in his footsteps and take advantage of all that his alma mater has to offer. He notes that although being a working professional and a student comes with challenges, Rider’s support system creates pathways for students to succeed.
My program was guided through great leadership from my advisor in the Continuing Studies program with a combination of online courses as well as in person courses to flexibly fit my needs while being a student and working full time. I am proud to call myself a Rider University graduate."
