The University is hosting a hip-hop star, famous comedian and its first-ever drive-in movie
by Michelle Wood '17
October: the month of falling leaves, pumpkin spice and some of Rider's most memorable events! With the semester settling in, the University has plenty of events to help take the stress away.
Here are the top five events students should not miss this month.
1) Godfrey
With the stress of classes and work piling up, one of the first events in October allows students to get out and have a laugh. The comedian Godfrey will make his second appearance at Rider on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 8 p.m. in the Bart Luedeke Center Theatre.
Godfrey is best known for his own one-hour special on Comedy Central, as well as his role in the FX pilot Bronx Warrants. He also has onscreen credits, which include Zoolander, 30 Rock and a recurring role on Louie. He also stars alongside Shaquille O’Neal on the TruTV series Upload.
2) Fall concert with Travis Scott
Hosted by the Student Entertainment Council, the annual fall concert welcomes back all students for a fun night of great music.
Two thousand students are likely to pack the Student Recreation Center for Travis Scott, a hip-hop star whose sophomore album, Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight, recently reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Last year, Big Sean brought down the house and was one of the most anticipated events of the year. Previous musicians who have performed at Rider's fall concert include Magic!, which at the time was riding the success of its worldwide hit "Rude," and Kelly Rowland of Destiny's Child.
“The SEC has come together so well as a team while we were working to put this event together,” said Student Entertainment Council President, Zachary Curtis. “I am really excited to see all of our hard work, and Travis is going to be a great show.”
The fall concert takes place on Friday, Oct. 7, at 8 p.m, with doors opening at 7:30 pm. There will be no admission without a Rider ID.
3) Midnight MAACness — The Bronc Awakens
Alumni Gym will once again be the site of the annual event Midnight MAACness as the Rider community kicks off the opening of the 2016-2017 men’s and women’s basketball seasons. The Star Wars themed celebration will provide great entertainment, including performances by the Rider Bronc, cheerleaders and dance team.
History will also be made as the Bronc mascot will finally be named after 80 years. One of the University’s biggest traditions, Midnight MAACness will begin at 10:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14.
Tickets and Rider ID are required to enter. Ticket giveaway will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 12, in Alumni Gym. Come to MAACness to support your Rider Broncs in a new athletic season and receive a free T-shirt!
4) Lip Sync Battle
The second annual Lip Sync Battle: Halloween Edition is ready to take on Rider. Presented by the SEC, Rider’s Lip Sync Battle is similar to the hit segment featured on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon.
Single or group acts are welcomed to perform a song of their choice. As a fundraiser for Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society, a basket will collect donations after each act performs. At the end of the night, the money earned by each act will be counted and the winner will be determined by who has raised the most money.
Rider’s Lip Sync Battle: Halloween Edition will begin at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, in The Pub. Make sure to bring some cash to help determine the winner!
5) Scream Screen, Rider's first-ever drive-in movie event
Get in the Halloween Spirit as 107.7 The Bronc sponsors Scream Screen, Rider's first-ever drive-in movie event.
Students will have the opportunity to park their cars on the Campus Mall or grab a blanket and enjoy a frighteningly fun movie with delicious food. The festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with chances to break out of the Student Entertainment Council’s Escape Room. Starting at 7 p.m. you'll be able to paint your own Jack O’Lantern. Stop by all 13 of The Bronc’s trunk-or-treat stations for free Halloween candy, coupons, promotional items, samples and more. Enjoy some free apple cider and cider donuts from Terhune Orchard’s, pizza from DeLorenzo’s on the Go, homemade ice cream from Purple Cow Ice Cream, Shake-n-Take popcorn and potato chips courtesy of Rider Dining By Aramark, and more!
The movie that will be show shown is up to the students! Vote for one of 13 seasonal favorites by Friday, Sept. 30, then choose between the Top 5 vote getters from Monday, Oct. 3, through Friday, Oct. 7. The movie with the most votes will be kept secret until the main event. Find out the winning film by attending Scream Screen on Friday, Oct. 28. Cars will be allowed on the Campus Mall beginning at 6 p.m. and must be parked by 7:30 p.m. Movie begins, on a giant 40' x 22' inflatable movie screen (the largest screen of its kind on the East Coast) at 8 p.m.
Looking for more to do? A series of events called #RIDERVOTES, which includes a registration drive, voting rights rally and speakers from the U.S. House of Representatives, takes place Oct. 3-5.
On Oct. 19, Pulitizer Prize-winning journalist Sonia Nazario will take you inside the world of millions of immigrant women who have come to the U.S. as single mothers and the children they have left behind in their home countries in Central America and Mexico by delivering a keynote address on America’s immigration dilemma. Nazario is the author of Rider’s Shared Read selection for 2016-17, Enrique’s Journey.
Finally, Rider theatre will take a comedic romp into the world of fantasy role-playing games with performances of She Kills Monsters Oct. 26-30.
