"Painting Place" features recent landscape paintings and drawings.
The Rider University Art Gallery will present an exhibition of paintings by Lynette Lombard, “Painting Place,” from Monday, January 23 through Sunday, February 26, 2012.
A reception for the artist will be held on Tuesday, February 7 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Gallery. Curator Deborah Rosenthal, Rider’s own artist and professor of Fine Arts in Rider’s School of Fine and Performing Arts, will introduce a talk by the artist on her work, at 6 p.m. in the gallery. Admission is free.
A painter represented by the Bowery Gallery in New York, where she has had several exhibitions of her work in recent years, Lynette Lombard has shown her work in many venues in the United States and abroad, including the Museum of Modern Art in Mojacar, Spain; the Painting Center; the New York Studio School Gallery and Lohin Geduld Gallery in New York; the Lakeview Museum in Peoria, Illinois; and the Artemisia Gallery in Chicago. Her work is in public and private collections including the Sir Isaac Hayward Collection, Hayward Gallery, London, and the Collum Davis Library Bradley University Collection.
Ms. Lombard received her MFA in painting from Yale University, and her bachelor’s degree from Goldsmiths College of Art, University of London. She also studied at the New York Studio School of Painting and Sculpture. A renowned teacher of painting, Ms. Lombard is Associate Professor of Art at Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, and has taught at the Chautauqua Institution summer program, the Ox-Bow program of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was a visiting artist at the International School in Montecastello di Vibio, Italy.
“Painting Place” presents a group of recent landscape paintings and drawings, from Ms. Lombard’s work in Illinois and in Andalusia, Spain, where she paints in the summers. The large forms and heightened color of the canvases result from a combination of direct observation onsite and later work on the paintings in the studio.
“I am particularly pleased to bring such an articulate and engaged painter/teacher to our campus, “ curator Prof. Rosenthal said. “Rider’s art students will benefit enormously from being able to meet with Ms. Lombard, participate in critiques with her and even draw with her at the museum. They’re going to be able to see the relationship between the paintings on the wall and the ideas and inspirations of the person who painted them. This is a particularly valuable experience for anyone in a studio course.”
Ms. Lombard’s work has been discussed by critics including Lance Esplund, currently senior critic for Bloomberg News, who wrote, “Lombard’s collisions of color convey the activity and immediacy of the artist’s eye as it darts from motif to palette to canvas in an attempt to rein in everything before the light changes. Our senses are heightened.”
