by Rachel Stengel '14
On March 28, Rider University will host Dr. Joia Mukherjee, associate professor at Harvard Medical School and chief medical officer of Partners In Health to discuss “Health delivery: a paradigm shift for the poor."
Mukherjee's presentation will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the DiDonato Family Lecture Hall (Science and Technology Center, room 102) with a reception following the event. The event is free and open to the public. The presentation is part of the Rider University Health Studies Institute's event series dedicated to providing lectures, workshops and conferences on timely health-related subjects.
"There are few people in the world who are more informed about the health disparities that exist between the rich and poor or more inspiring about the way forward than Dr. Mukherjee," said Dr. Nancy Wiencek, director of the Health Studies Institute.
Mukherjee is an internist, pediatrician, infectious disease doctor and public health specialist. As chief medical officer for the international medical charity Partners In Health, she supports the organization's efforts to provide high quality, comprehensive health care to the poorest in partnership with local communities and health officials in more than 10 countries.
Clinically, she focuses on HIV, multi-drug resistant tuberculosis, mental health, Ebola, human resources for health, and health systems strengthening. She is the author of An Introduction to Global Health Delivery, a practical guide to the history and delivery of global health. She also helped create a new residency and fellowship training program for Rwandan and Haitian physicians as well as global health residencies and fellowships for U.S. trainees at Harvard and other American universities.
