Greek life takes special prominence this year
by Robert Leitner ’17
An abundance of Greek groups will be back in Lawrenceville during the 2017 Rider Reunions. While more than 30 events are planned for all alumni from June 9 to 11, Greek life — this year's theme — takes special prominence.
There are many reasons to return to Rider for Reunions. These are the top five:
Reconnect with your brothers and sisters
Reunions are planned with all alumni in mind, but the focus of this year’s weekend is reuniting Greeks. Wear your Greek letters or pins. Togas optional!
For details on these events, please see the full Rider Reunions schedule.
Food trucks!
Don’t miss the Oh-MEGA Lunch Party featuring a towering lunch selection from an array of food trucks and the Beer Garden of Dionysis. Following the lunch is the Olympic Garden Party, where light hors d’oeuvres will be served and you will have the chance to greet President Dell’Omo and his wife, Polly.
The Oh-MEGA Lunch Party takes place June 10 from noon to 3 p.m., and will have a cash beer garden. The Olympic Garden Party takes place from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on June 10. Dinner on the Mall takes place from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 10, and will also have a cash beer garden.
Parties worthy of Dionysus
As daytime activities and dinner wind down, put on your dancing shoes and prepare for some fun! Start off your evening dancing under the stars at the Intercultural Greek Council/Intercultural Alumni Dance Party. Bring your best moves while DJ Weswill takes over the night. After the party, make your way over to the shenanigans at the Lip Sync Battle, where you can take “Centaur” Stage in a contest to see who has the best faux chops.
The Dance Party takes place on Saturday, June 10, from 7 to 10 p.m., and the Lip Sync Battle will take place from 8 to 11 p.m. Both events require proper ID and will have a cash bar.
Celebrate extraordinary accomplishments
Some of your fellow alumni have achieved extraordinary accomplishments, and there are two award ceremonies to honor them. The Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony celebrates the legendary athletic excellence at Rider. Among the five honorees is Greg Meehan ’01 of Swimming and Diving, who went on to coach five-time Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky. In addition, the Rider Alumni Awards Ceremony will honor four recipients and the Science Stairway of Fame Inductees.
The Rider Alumni Awards Ceremony will also be held June 10, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and is free. The Athletics Hall of Fame Ceremony will be held on Saturday, June 10, at 7:30 p.m. $65 per person.
Mark special dates
Among the many social gatherings bringing alumni together during Reunions, a few specific events help mark special dates for alumni. These include the Class of 2007's 10th reunion; the Department of Geological, Environmental, and Marine Sciences (GEMS) 50th-anniversary celebration dinner; and The Olde Guarde Society Brunch with the Class of 1967 induction.
