Philip D. Murphy, a potential 2017 candidate for N.J. governor, will visit Rider on Nov. 13
by Christopher Brooks
The Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics at Rider University will present “An Evening With Hon. Philip D. Murphy,” former U.S. Ambassador to Germany and founder of New Start New Jersey, an organization dedicated to strengthening the state’s middle class, on Nov. 13.
Murphy is also a potential Democratic gubernatorial candidate in 2017.
The event will take place in the Mercer Room in Daly Dining Hall on Rider’s Lawrenceville campus. A light reception will begin at 6 p.m. followed by remarks at 7 p.m. and a question-and-answer session with the audience. The event is free and open to the public.
“As we often say, the road to Trenton runs through Rider,” says Ben Dworkin, director of the Rebovich Institute for New Jersey Politics. “Bringing Phil Murphy to campus is part of our larger effort to host all major candidates who are looking to be governor in the post-Christie era.”
Murphy has previously worked for Goldman Sachs for more than 20 years, dealing with rating agencies, investors and regulators to attract and develop businesses. In 2003, he left Goldman Sachs to focus on civic engagement and philanthropy. Murphy and his wife, Tammy, founded 2nd Floor, a teen helpline that has received thousands of calls and saved many lives in New Jersey.
In addition, Murphy has served on the board of the NAACP’s Special Contribution Fund and was also asked by Chairman Howard Dean to serve as the National Finance chair for the Democratic National Committee (DNC) in 2006. During his time as National Finance chair, Murphy helped to raise nearly $300 million for the DNC. Following President Barack Obama’s 2008 election, Murphy was asked by Obama to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the Federal Republic of Germany.
