Dear students, faculty and staff,
Yesterday, we witnessed shocking scenes of mayhem in our nation's capital. As I watched the rioters’ reckless and misguided behavior in a state of disbelief and deep sadness, it was hard not to feel like the bonds that tie us to our fellow citizens were fraying to the point of breaking.
I believe with my whole heart that we are a better citizenry than was on display yesterday. We must denounce the conduct of the rioters, which went far beyond their right to express their views through protest.
As a whole, we must do better, and I know we can. Through the active participation in our community, we all have the opportunity to deepen our knowledge and shape our identities as responsible citizens and informed leaders. It is our responsibility to build a community that cares for each other, respects one another and inspires our best impulses as we seek to create the kind of world we want to live in.
That imperative always feels important, but at a moment like this, it becomes clear why it is indispensable. I pledge to continue working every day with you, side by side, as we continue our efforts to build a better community and contribute to the common good.
Sincerely,
Gregory G. Dell'Omo, Ph.D.
