Program Description
This course is designed in such a way to give participants detailed information on both pedagogy and teaching techniques. Students explore ways they can incorporate vocal pedagogy into choral rehearsals through exercises, gesture, and emotional connection between the music, the conductor, and the ensemble. Drawing on the work of Frauke Haasemann, program topics include the choral warm-up, techniques for teaching relaxation, alignment, inhalation and exhalation, opening the vocal tract, creating singing resonances, support and on-the-breath singing, leaps, crescendo/decrescendo, range extension, martellato, closed and open vowels, fundamentals of diction and conducting technique that supports the singing process. The course discusses new approaches to teaching vowels and the use of legato throughout all choral styles. In addition to vocal technique, aspects of a building choral sound that relates to developing listening skills are addressed with during the sessions. Dr. Jordan also shares philosophical approaches that advance the performance level of ensembles at any level.
